Why Atlantic Anesthesia

For more than forty years we have been dedicated to developing a strong team of physician and CRNA leaders to build an anesthesia practice that provides excellent service to the patients, surgeons and hospitals we serve.
We Start With the Best
Our physicians come from medical training programs at the University of Virginia, Duke, Yale, UNC, Columbia University, Massachusetts General and other outstanding programs. We demonstrate excellent leadership across a variety of disciplines, and our entire team of 40 physicians is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiologists (ABA). Our entire team of CRNAs holds current certification through the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
We Strive to Improve
We have instituted rigorous internal scrutiny of all of our clinical and management practices. From our customized perioperative patient evaluation and management tools to our comprehensive internal performance evaluation system, we continue to cultivate and enhance our culture of excellence. Visit our Advancing Excellence Page for more information on these practices and models.

Patient Safety Committee
The Patient Safety Committee is charged with establishing guidelines, insuring compliance, making recommendations and establishing policies and procedures for the safe and effective practice of anesthesia.

Protocols

We are actively involved in the development and implementation of protocols, including pain management and post-operative monitoring, that are used throughout Sentara. We are also actively involved in the Volunteer Hospitals of America initiatives regarding anesthesia care.

Teaching Programs

Our staff is heavily involved in teaching programs at local universities and medical schools. Physicians and CRNAs provide instruction to students from Old Dominion University’s School of Nurse Anesthesia. Our physicians are also active in providing instruction for emergency medicine, obstetrics, Surgery, ENT, and other specialty residents and medical students attending Eastern Virginia Medical School.

All our CRNAs and Anesthesiologists commit dozens of hours annually to continuing education in anesthesia and relevant knowledge fields. These include formalized training in new Technology including PICIS, ECARE, anesthesia specific I.T., ACLS, ATLS, and multiple ASA, ABA, and AANA sponsored and approved conferences.

The academic credentials of our physicians have allowed us to share our knowledge and experience by lecturing at seminars and conferences. Our physicians are also actively involved in decisions being made by our state legislators.

Cost-Containment Measures

Our physicians and CRNAs are successful in seeking ways to provide or improve cost-containment measures for our patients and facilities. They include:

  • Reduction of pharmacy expenses by identifying alternative drug choices
  • Materials and equipment management
  • Identification of lower cost supplies and anesthesia circuits
  • Managing staff for known low-volume periods using AAI proprietary record system software
  • Amplifying regional anesthesia provider availability through extensive support of local student nurse anesthetist training, reducing dependence on outside contractors and enhancing community commitment
